Title: From Long Reach to Smart Reach: The Evolution of SerDes for AI Infrastructure

Abstract:

The explosive growth of AI is reshaping the design priorities for high-speed interconnects. Unlike traditional networking applications that prioritize maximum reach, AI scale-up architectures demand unprecedented bandwidth density, lower power consumption, and optimized medium-reach connectivity between accelerators, memory, and emerging optical interfaces. This presentation examines why these fundamentally different system requirements call for a new generation of purpose-built SerDes architectures. Drawing on the development of a 224G PAM4 SerDes optimized specifically for AI infrastructure, the session explores the key architectural tradeoffs, implementation challenges and system-level benefits of designing for the unique characteristics of scale-up AI fabrics. You'll learn how optimized interconnect can increase aggregate bandwidth, improve power efficiency, and enable next-generation chiplet, near-package optics, and co-packaged optics deployments.
